Burkhard Stangl´s Ereignislose Musik (Loose Music), released way back in 1996 on the Random Acoustics label and long out of print, was a holy grail of sorts form e, the long trail of a stray copy ending in a dusty corner of a New York record shop in 2005. The album has now reappeared as the last disc of a three CD set of Stangl´s composed work, the presumabbly ironically, if also accurately titled Hommage A Moi. Despite approaching three decades as a composer Stangl probably remains best known as an improvising guitarist, and from the monumental Konzert für Posaune und 22 Instrumente, the centrepiece of Loose Music written for Radu Malfatti, to 2007´s Concert For Saxophone And Quiet Players, a similary structured work for John Butcher, improvisational elements are given a place amongst the vast array of pieces included in this set.
Vocal works, electroacoustic composition, works for organ, recorder trio, trumpet, various sized ensembles and even a piece for countertenor and guitar named My Dowland, which sets faux 17th century musical forms against the crackle and hum of muted modern electronics, are all included. Surprisingly, given his role as a guitarist in the early stages of improvised Reductionism alongside Malfatti in Polwechsel, and melodic song structures alongside Christoph Kurzmann in Schnee, the common themes are an attention to texture and density. There´s such a wide range of material that generalisation is difficult, but Stangl seems to enjoy the way sounds impact upon each other when layered, from the thick resonances of 2005´s Three Pieces For Organ tot he muted multiple greys oft he piece for Malfatti.
Far from an over-inquisitive composer dipping in and out of styles and watering down the overall impact in the process, this collection of Stangl´s work, as strong as it is varied, highlights his inherent musicality, a basic understanding of how sounds work together perhaps formed out of years improvising in the moment. With such skills in place a composer may turn his hand to any number of forms, and Hommage A Moi is a fitting testimonial to a fine example.
